Video: Unearthly Passage – Lower Antelope Slot Canyon

posted by gumptiongear July 20, 2012 0 comments

No other slot canyon in the southwest has been featured in more photographs or has been visited more than Antelope Canyon, which is sometimes referred to as “The Corkscrew.” Situated in the far north and central region of Arizona, the canyon is just a few miles from Page, Arizona and scenic Lake Powell. Set on Navajo lands, the canyon is a great destination for hikers.

This incredible canyon has been created over many thousands of years by the relentless forces of water and wind, slowly carving and sculpting the sandstone into forms, textures, and shapes which we observe today.

The video, shot by  offers a glimpse into the incredible beauty of this place.

Time Lapse Video: The Mountain

Last year, Norwegian landscape photographer Terje Sorgjerd trekked to El Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, and stayed awake for many, many nights to capture stunning time-lapse footage of the Milky Way galaxy. (See the video below.)

Sprawled out over the lush landscape, the stars seemed close enough to reach out and touch. The video, called The Mountain, was shot over seven days in which Sorgjerd stayed outside with his camera, and without a tent or sleeping bag.  You’ll be thankful for his efforts.

Time Lapse Tour of Yosemite National Park

posted by gumptiongear June 15, 2012 0 comments

“We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us. Our flesh-and-bone tabernacle seems transparent as glass to the beauty about us, as if truly an inseparable part of it, thrilling with the air and trees, streams and rocks, in the waves of the sun,—a part of all nature, neither old nor young, sick nor well, but immortal.”
— John Muir from My First Summer in the Sierra (1911)

Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, and Giant Sequoia groves.   Through the use of time-lapse photography combined with controlled-motion dollies, Sheldon Neill and Colin Delehanty have created a video that attempts to capture the grandeur and emotional presence of Yosemite National Park.  It seemed the perfect way to walk you into the weekend.

Video: Last of the Great Unknown (Trailer)

posted by gumptiongear June 1, 2012 0 comments

The Grand Canyon is an immense place, almost unfathomable in scale, and one of the last places in the American West to be explored. John Wesley Powell called it the “Great Unknown,” having no idea what rapids, falls, or canyons awaited him on his first descent of the river in 1869. In the decades since, the Canyon has been a playground for dozens of explorers. River runners, backpackers, routefinders, lithic hunters, and peakbaggers have all laid claim to the Canyon’s iconic landmarks, often seeking out the prestigious “firsts.”

Yet deep within the Grand Canyon remain secret and intimate tributaries rarely visited by man. This is the story of these slots and the canyoneers who systematically explore their drainages.
