IMG_9621Want a comfortable place to sit around the fire without hauling around a 10-pound chair in an oversized carrying case? Then kick back and relax in the Treo™ chair from Therm-a-Rest, engineered to provide a  comfortable, lightweight chair in an impressively convenient and portable package.

On Performance and Design…
Today’s modern world feels more complex and complicated than ever. It’s one of the reasons we take joy in the simple things; like products that help us unwind the complexity and streamline the chaos. It’s the same reason we appreciate the simplicity and modern minimalist design of Treo.

DSC_0484Thanks to a unique patent-pending design that allows it to pack entirely into its own rugged tripod base, the Treo ensures that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for portability. It’s built with a realistic seat height that stands above other minimalist-minded seating options that are currently available. A ripstop Dyneema nylon sling offers hammock-esque seating while the 6000-series aluminum poles and composite base will easily support a 250lbs person.

IMG_9623Setting up the Treo is a breeze: no need for directions or advanced mechanical engineering degrees here.  Four exceptionally durable aluminum poles create the frame for the nylon sling. Simply take the polls out of the canister and insert them into the four holes on the top portion of the base, with the longer poles supporting the back. Slide the sling into place and presto! Like magic you have  a front row seat to the show as you watch your camp neighbors wrestle their old school camp chairs from their nylon carrying sleeves.

Notes from the field…

From family campfires to family days at the beach, the Treo is easy to set-up, and even easier to pack up and transport. Yet despite the clever and highly functional design, it’s not all roses. In our opinion there is one design flaw which stems from the shallow angle of the shorter poles which support your legs. The length of the poles results in a slightly more narrow width for your legs than other compact camp chairs we’ve tested. Moreover, the shallow angle means that you’ll feel the poles under the sling which can become bothersome during extended periods of sitting.

Also, weighing in at 2.4 lbs, the  Treo chair may not make it on your multi-day backwoods excursion, but it’s great for hanging out roasting marshmallows around the campfire, enjoying a sunset at the beach or watching your children at the all-day sporting competition.

Bottom line…
In a world full of complexity, the Therm-a-Rest  Treo offers a simple and comfortable alternative. Easy to pack and even easier to transport, the Treo chair is great for virtually any and every occasion where outdoor seating is needed.
